Club History
Our History
Harbor Yacht Club was founded in 1952 by twelve passionate sailors who pooled their resources to lease a small waterfront shed on Port Haven Harbor. Led by founding Commodore William Whitmore, the group incorporated as a nonprofit with a simple mission: make sailing accessible to everyone.
The Early Years (1952–1970)
The club grew steadily through the 1950s and 60s, acquiring its first permanent dock in 1958 and breaking ground on the original clubhouse in 1963. The Junior Sailing Program launched in 1965 with six Sabots and a volunteer instructor.
Growth & Recognition (1970–2000)
The modern clubhouse was completed in 1978, and the marina expanded to 40 slips in 1985. HYC hosted its first regional championship in 1982 — the Founders Cup, which continues as our most prestigious annual regatta. The pool complex was added in 1992.
The Modern Era (2000–Present)
A major renovation in 2010 modernized the clubhouse with a new bar, restaurant, and event space. The Junior Academy expanded to serve 200 young sailors annually. Today, Harbor Yacht Club has over 300 member families and hosts 15 regatta series each season.
